Yet, as of mid-August, only one player has been offloaded, with Marcus Rashford heading out on loan to Barcelona. The English forward is one of Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ whom the club is eager to get rid of before the window slams shut on September 1.
Alejandro Garnacho is another Red Devil headed for the chopping block, and this has been clear since the window opened. The Argentine winger hit out at his manager for dropping him for the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 21-year-old has acted like a petulant child throwing their toys out of the pram to try and force a move to Chelsea. This includes wearing an Aston Villa shirt with Rashford’s name printed on the back earlier this summer and he has since liked any Fabrizio Romano post related to a potential Stamford Bridge switch.
Garnacho has almost certainly played his last game for United amid an anticipated sale. He’s not the only one for whom there is no way back at Old Trafford while Amorim is in charge.
Jadon Sancho
While United fans have grown weary of Garnacho’s tomfoolery, it’s nothing new for the Old Trafford fanbase, as they watched Jadon Sancho similarly cause issues behind closed doors. The English winger took umbrage with Amorim’s predecessor, Erik ten Hag, going public with his criticism of a lack of effort in training.
Sancho labelled Ten Hag a “liar” and accused the Dutchman of making him a “scapegoat” in a now-deleted social media post. He was soon exiled from the first team and sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund in January 2024 before joining Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer.
Antony
It’s fair to say that Antony was the biggest success of the four first-team stars United sent out on loan last season, as he enjoyed a career renaissance at Real Betis. The Brazilian winger was doomed from the start at Carrington when he arrived in a £85m deal with scouts previously valuing him at £25m.
Antony opened up on the mental struggles he encountered during his spell with the Red Devils as his price tag weighed heavily. He shone out on loan at Betis, putting in fine performances to help the La Liga side reach the Europa Conference League final.
Marcus Rashford
When a teenage Marcus Rashford debuted in 2015, many envisioned he’d follow in Wayne Rooney’s footsteps and become a United all-time great. The English attacker had all the ability in the world, but consistency marred his progression and denied him a place among the very best to pull on a Red Devils shirt.
Rashford was unstoppable in the 2022-23 season, bagging 30 goals across competitions, a major feat for the Englishman. But question marks over his professionalism failed to go away even when Ten Hag stook by him after calling in sick for training after a supposed Belfast bender.
While the Portuguese coach remains in charge, there is absolutely no chance we will see the 27-year-old represent his boyhood club again. But keep in mind that he is on loan at Camp Nou, which could open the door for a homecoming if Amorim were to get the boot.
Rasmus Hojlund
There’s no faulting Rasmus Hojlund’s dedication to becoming a success at United as he’s made clear his desire to “stay and fight” for his place. But words only go so far and, with a record of just four league goals in his sophomore season, it feels as though INEOS and Amorim have decided to cut ties.
Benjamin Sesko’s arrival from RB Leipzig has cast significant doubt over his future at the club, and it’s thought he’s available for £40m. AC Milan are keen and a move to the Serie A giants could help the misfiring Dane to get his career back on track.
Tyrell Malacia
There’s an argument to be had that Tyrell Malacia has been harshly treated by United this summer amid being frozen out of Amorim’s pre-season squad. The Dutch left-back returned from a year-long spell on the sidelines with a serious injury but has unfortunately not been the same player.
United are reportedly prepared to accept a mere £4m for the Dutchman, taking a hit on the £12.9m fee they paid Feyenoord back in 2022. The signings of Patrick Dorgu and Diego Leon indicate his Old Trafford career is over.
Altay Bayindir
Andre Onana’s future is certainly not certain amid a mistake-prone United spell but his understudy, Altay Bayindir, will surely be shown the door before the Cameroonian. The Turkish shot-stopper filled in for Onana during pre-season but his displays have made clear the need for a better backup.
Bayindir seems a team player with the right mentality but his performances have left much to be admired bar his penalty shootout heroics against Arsenal in last season’s FA Cup. A move for Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens is reportedly under consideration, and it feels as though he’d be best served battling it out with Onana for the number one jersey.
