Before becoming famous as mob boss Tony Soprano on The Sopranos, James Gandolfini was a charming, well-liked teen from New Jersey. Born in 1961, he was voted “best looking” and “biggest flirt” in high school, where he discovered his love for acting. A classmate of John Travolta, Gandolfini was inspired to pursue acting after seeing movie photos of him at a local shop.
He later graduated from Rutgers University and rose to fame playing the complex, ruthless yet sensitive Tony Soprano. His performance earned him three Emmys and a Golden Globe. He once described himself as “a 260-pound Woody Allen,” showing his humor and humility despite his tough on-screen persona.
Tragically, Gandolfini died of a heart attack in Rome in 2013 at the age of 51, while vacationing with his son Michael. Nearly a decade later, Michael followed in his father’s footsteps, playing young Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark. He admitted feeling pressure but said he simply wanted to make his father proud.
