Newcastle United 1-2 Barcelona Champions League Player Ratings and Match Highlights

Two superb goals from Marcus Rashford saw Barcelona beat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Champions League. An electric opening 10 minutes, which saw Newcastle press Barcelona aggressively. Anthony Elanga’s ball across the 18-yard box deserved to be lashed into the net. Although Harvey Barnes hit the target, he couldn’t beat Joan Garcia in the Barcelona goal. Newcastle were unable to maintain such a frenetic pace. Even under the greatest of pressure, Barcelona refused to be hurried, and it was the away side who began to dominate the ball. Newcastle went into the break nil-nil, but perhaps ruing their missed opportunity.

As the second-half developed, the likes of de Jong and Pedri began dictating play. It led to Barcelona taking the lead. When Jules Kounde dropped a right-wing cross into the box, Marcus Rashford had plenty to do. Yet the England winger sent a powerful 12-yard header past Nick Pope. Within 10 minutes Rashford scored an even better goal, smashing home past Pope from outside the penalty area. Newcastle were understandably subdued for a spell after this. Yet the home side did pull a goal back through Anthony Gordon, which set up a grandstand finish, but Barcelona held on for the win.
