Sweden 2-2 England: Women’s Euro 2025 Player Ratings and Match Highlights

England have progressed to the semi-finals of the 2025 Women’s European Championship following a victory against Sweden, in which a 2-2 draw saw England win 3-2 on penalties. The Lionesses will now face Italy for a chance to progress to the final.

It was a quick start to proceedings for Sweden, who scored their earliest goal of the tournament, putting themselves ahead just two minutes into the match. Following an error from Keira Walsh, who gave away possession just outside her own box, the ball found its way to captain Kosovare Asilani, who powered a shot into the bottom left corner.

Not long after, it appeared that Peter Gerdhardsson’s Sweden would double their lead, if not for a last-ditch tackle from Leah Williamson to block Arsenal teammate Stina Blackstenius’ shot. A nervy England start was nearly forgotten as Lauren Hemp hit the bar in the sixth minute, a reminder to Sweden that they are facing the reigning Women’s European Champions.

However, the Lionesses were soon two down, with Blackstenius getting her third goal in four games. Having assisted the first goal for her country, an inch-perfect pass from Julia Zigiotti Olme allowed the forward to get behind the defence, and provide a similar finish to Asllani, one that went into the bottom right corner.

Entering the second half, 2-0 down, England had nothing to lose. Trying to emulate the start of their opposition, Ella Toone nearly got one back for England, if not for a great save by Jennifer Falk, as well as an offside flag. Not long after, Lauren Hemp, England’s bright spark in the first half, got on the end of a perfect Lucy Bronze cross, only to head just wide of the right-hand post.

A quiet second half ensued before Sarina Wiegman made three substitutions that changed the game. As Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang entered the fold, it was a perfect cross from Kelly that found Lucy Bronze, who scored from a tight angle. Then, just a minute later, a Kelly cross dropped to Mead, who found Agyemang, who slotted home from close range to even the scoring, allowing England to take Sweden into extra-time.

Extra time was unlike the original 90 minutes and provided fans with an uneventful half an hour. With the momentum chopping and changing, the best chance fell to Alessia Russo, who was unable to convert a chance in the final minute. Going into penalties, England secured the advantage, opting to take the shootout in front of the England faithful.

A shootout where penalties seemed to be saved more than they were scored. Jennifer Falk was at the centre of all things great. Stopping three in a row, before sadly missing her own, she returned to form for England’s sixth penalty. However, Hannah Hampton was equal to Falk, keeping her side in it twice in a row, when it seemed that England were all but out.

As was the theme of the shoot-out, it took Sweden to miss their seventh penalty for England to progress 3-2, a shoot-out in which both goalkeepers gave it their all. England will now face Italy in the semi-finals of the Women’s European Championship.
