United States Player Ratings

Malik Tillman-1

GK – Matt Freese – 5.5/10

Matt Freese could’ve done a bit better on the goal, but he was not the culprit. He wasn’t tested a ton, but did nothing to lose his spot as the Americans No. 1 keeper.

RB – Miles Robinson – 6/10

Not bad, not great, but overall pretty solid. Miles Robinson looked like he belonged against one of the best teams in South America.

CB – Chris Richards – 6/10

It was an up-and-down performance by the USMNT’s best defensive player. Chris Richards was one of the culprits in the goal, but then had plenty of clutch defensive plays and almost scored. But the Americans need more stability from one of their best players.

LB – Tim Ream – 6.5/10

Tim Ream was mostly solid in possession with a few good long balls. The 38-year-old’s lack of pace didn’t stand out as much as it should against an opponent like this. A solid performance from the veteran defender.

RM – Tim Weah – 5.5/10

The Americans need more from the Marseille man, especially on some of his crosses. That being said, Tim Weah was still dangerous and involved in the goal, which helps his case to start going forward.

CM – Tanner Tessmann – 7/10

Tanner Tessmann resembled the player he has been with Lyon on several occasions Friday night. The 24-year-old was stable in possession and defense and dynamic going forward. Tessmann should get more call-ups with performances like this one.

CM – Aidan Morris – 4.5/10

Aidan Morris has been one of the best midfielders in the English Championship this season, but he struggled at times against Ecuador. It wasn’t a disaster class by any means for the 23-year-old, and he was active and feisty. But he was also late with a challenge on the game’s deciding goal.

LM – Max Arfsten – 5.5/10

Very good going forward, not so great coming back. Max Arfsten has been better in his more attacking role rather than in a traditional left-back position. Seems like a locked-in back-up to Antonee Robinson at this point.

RW – Weston McKennie – 6.5/10

Weston McKennie did commit the turnover that eventually led to the goal, but aside from that, the Americans’ swiss-army knife was very active on Friday night. The Americans were sorely missing the 27-year-old’s energy.

LW – Malik Tillman – 7/10

Dynamic at times and then at times a bit quiet. The man has the talent to be a locked-in starter for Pochettino’s squad, and showed some decent chemistry with McKennie and Balogun. The assist was much deserved.

ST – Folarin Balogun – 8.5/10 (Man of the Match)

Strikers are on the field to score or assist and Folarin Balogun did just that on Friday. The  striker was frequently dangerous with his runs and tested the keeper a few times, including on the game-tying goal.

SUB – Diego Luna – 5.5/10

Gave the team a solid energy boost, but also missed a few key chances to put the game out of hand.

SUB – Haji Wright – 5.5/10

Made some great runs, and probably should’ve scored in the second half. Could’ve done better with the looks he got.

SUB – Cristian Roldan – N/A

Didn’t do much after coming on.

SUB – Alex Freeman – N/A

SUB – Mark McKenzie – N/A

Ecuador Player Ratings

Ecuador

GK – Hernán Galíndez – 7.5/10

Hernán Galíndez had an excellent, making multiple impressive saves throughout the night. The 38-year-old isn’t getting any younger, but he certainly didn’t look like that on Friday night.

RB – Alan Franco- 5.5/10

Alan Franco was at times, shaky in possession, but held up well defensively against a capable American attack. The Campeonato Brasileiro did his job for the most part.

CB – Joel Ordóñez – 6.5/10

Joel Ordóñez was the better of the two center-backs and had the hockey assist on Ecuador’s only goal.

CB – Willian Pacho – 5/10

We expect excellence from a player of Willian Pacho‘s caliber and the PSG center-back was not great by his standards. Was tested by Folarin Baolgun a few times, handling well for the most part, but then was beat on the goal.

LB – Pervis Estupiñán – 6.5/10

The  left-back was mostly solid getting back and dynamic going forward. Unfortunately, Estupiñán picked up an injury early on in the first half and had to be subbed out.

CDM – Jordy Alcivar – 5/10

Jordy Alcivar lost the midfield battle on Friday night and at times looked outpaced by the American attack. Not a terrible performance but also not great.

CDM – Pedro Vite – 5.5/10

Was solid in the defense and capable in possession. Pedro Vite opportunities to go forward, but created some dangerous players when given the opportunity. Still definitely wouldn’t stat over the likes of Caicedo of course.

RW- Ángelo Preciado – 6/10.

Ángelo Preciado was the more dynamic of the two wingers, but also didn’t play a part in the goal and had very few opportunities to come forward. But it’s hard to blame the 27-year-old for that.

CAM – John Yeboah – 7.5

John Yeboah was a strong contender for Man of the Match, putting him multiple dangerous through-ball including the deciding assist to Enner Valencia. An overall fantastic game for the Venezia winger.

LW – Kendry Páez – 5.5/10

Kendry Páez put in a decent shift, even though he didn’t have a ton of opportunities going forward against an American team that mostly dominated possession.

ST – Enner Valencia – 8/10

Enner Valencia was the favorite for Man of the Match until Folarin Balogun scored. The 35-year-old had an excellent run on goal, outpacing a very good center-back in Chris Richards.

SUB – Yaimar Medina – 5/10

Struggled at times in possession and was culpable in the goal.

SUB – Kevin Rodríguez – N/A

Didn’t do much after coming on.

SUB – Leonardo Campana – N/A

Didn’t do much after coming on.

SUB – Nilson Angulo – N/A

Didn’t do much after coming on.
